Rita Morais

programme cycle 02 / A intimidade do redondo

in Collaboration With: Sara Bichão

Rita Morais, based in Porto, studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Lisbon and began the MA Artists' Film & Moving Image program at Goldsmiths University in London in 2020. Her practice spans the fields of experimental cinema and installation, with her own productions taking place on Pico Island, Azores, and serving as an artist in residence at the International Artists Society in Reykjavik, Iceland. She also frequently works as a cinema programmer, currently collaborating on the experimental section of the Curtas de Vila do Conde Festival and founding miragem, a film showcase in the landscape that occurs annually in the Azores.

(This residency was conducted in partnership with porto/ post/ doc.)

Within cycle #02, artists Rita Morais and Sara Bichão, invited by @portopostdoc, were simultaneously in residence at AW. Rita's process involved an intense observation of the place, particularly the integration of industrial complexes in ultra-rural environments. The premise was to think about this place from the rubble, the waste, the leftovers that the ArtWorks factory produces.

Once the structure is built, the remnants rust and decay in heaps, in the surroundings of the place that gave them form. We return to the origin of the site, the one that surrounds the noise of the factory, like a forgotten landscape, to find the forms of movement that inhabit there. The intimacy of the round - a filmed mapping, through the seasons, of the circular thinking of nature and the remnants of humanity left there after the construction catastrophe. After all, the mill still turns, albeit without brakes, and the question now is to know for whom.
